Making Japanese paper lanterns with your family is a nice way to spend an afternoon. These paper lanterns are easy to make and will bring a touch of the Japanese culture to your home or garden. Use the steps provided as a template for making your own Japanese paper lanterns.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8" x 12" Construction paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Crayons, markers or colored pencils
  • Ruler
  1. Step 1

Color a scene, flower arrangement, or a symbol of Japan on one side of a 8" x 12" piece of colored construction paper.

  2. Step 2

Use a ruler to measure and cut one inch off the short end of the paper. Set aside to use as the handle. Fold the paper in half lengthwise

  3. Step 3

Draw a line 1 inch from the end of the long edge of the paper opposite the folded edge. This will be the line where you stop cutting.

  4. Step 4

Measure and mark lines 1 inch apart starting at the folded edge and moving towards the "stop cutting" line. Cut on the marked lines up to the "stop cutting" line.

  5. Step 5

Unfold the paper and re-crease it in the opposite direction. This will hide any marks on the paper.

  6. Step 6

Wrap the paper into a cylindrical shape so that the 8" edges are touching. Glue the edges together.

  7. Step 7

Glue the handle to the top of the lantern.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add sequins, glitter or other decorations to make the lanterns unique.
  • Use different sizes, colors and types of paper to add variety to your lanterns.
