Kendo or "the art of the sword" was a way for samurai to practice their sword craft for centuries. After the Second World War this ancient and fascinating martial art began to spread around the world. Today Kendo classes and leagues may be found all over the United States and Europe. If you are looking to get involved, purchasing a quality sword is a good place to start.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Discover the type of Kendo sword you will need by taking a few classes to at least learn the basics. If you are interested in sparring you will need a shinai if you are interested in solo katas you will find a bokken better suits your needs.

  2. Step 2

Go to a martial arts supply store and look at the different swords and check their balance in your hand.

  3. Step 3

Look for bokken that are made of dense wood for soft contact demonstrations, soft wood bokken are often lighter and can make performing katas much easier.

  4. Step 4

For the competitive sparring matches you must have a bamboo shinai. The length and weight of which will depend upon your strength and style.

  5. Step 5

Check online for many manufactures of fine-quality, hand-crafted Kendo swords and equipment. These online shops often allow you to specify the exact size, weight and style of sword you choose.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bokken are not toys and can be wielded as dangerous weapons. Do not allow children or untrained personnel to use a bokken.

on 10/5/2008 Wonderful article; However, kendo has two meanings.
The first is the underlying principles of kenjutsu.
The second is the modern sport that, though may be derived from swordsmanship, cannot be construed as such.

The samurai were involved in Kenjutsu, a style of koryu bujutsu, not kendo.

Otherwise great and quintessential article for anyone looking to purchase a bokken; 5 stars.
