Step 1
Read the prompt and brainstorm for ideas. Think about how you want to tell the story. First person uses words like I, me and my. Third person uses words like he, she, him, her, they and their.
-
Step 2
Create a plot chart for your story. Give the beginning information and details in your exposition, describe the inciting force, choose a few key elements for your rising action that lead to your climax. Finish the narrative with any falling action and your resolution. Answer the questions who, what, when, where and why.
-
Step 3
Draft the narrative. Prepare to have at least five paragraphs - one introduction paragraph, three to five body paragraphs and one conclusion paragraph.
-
Step 4
Decide if you want to or need to add dialogue. If you choose to add dialogue, make sure that you know how to space and punctuate it correctly. If you are unsure, write the story without any dialogue.
-
Step 5
Revise and edit the narrative. Your mind may have been going faster than your pencil. Make sure that everything you wanted to include is actually in the written draft. Look for any major mistakes and fix any grammar or punctuation problems you may find.
