Step 1
Make sure you have a main idea for the essay. Use the prompt to determine the topic of the essay, then make sure that you choose and state the main idea for the essay in the introductory paragraph.
-
Step 2
Check for a logical flow from paragraph to paragraph. Check that all of your paragraphs are in order and that you are not missing any important details. Add transitional sentences if you do not have one after each body paragraph.
-
Step 3
Identify and complete any sentence fragments or incomplete thoughts. Make sure that each sentence has a subject and a verb and that there are no missing words you forgot to include during your initial writing.
-
Step 4
Skim for any spelling and grammar mistakes. Conventions make up one third of your total grade. Take the time to make sure that you have used words you know how to spell, end marks, correct punctuation and spacing in your sentences.
-
Step 5
Correct your paper legibly. Drawing a single line through a part of a sentence you want to omit is preferred over scratching or scribbling out lines of your essay. Additional words or rewritten sentences can be inserted with a caret.
