How to Take a GMAT Prep Course

If you plan to go to business school, you'll have to take the GMAT, or graduate management admission test. Although GMAT scores are not the only factor considered by admissions committees, a high score can make you stand out in an increasingly competitive applicant pool. Whether trying to raise a previous score or taking the GMAT for the first time, take a prep course for best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a GMAT prep course that meets your scheduling needs and complements your learning style. Many test prep companies offer traditional classroom instruction as well as one-on-one tutoring and online courses.

    • 2

Familiarize yourself with the test format and subject matter. The GMAT consists of three sections: analytical writing; verbal and quantitative. For the writing section, you will write 2 essays: an argument essay and an issue essay. The verbal section tests reading comprehension, critical reasoning skills and knowledge of basic English grammar. The quantitative section consists of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data sufficiency questions.

    • 3

Take a practice test before you begin the prep course. This will allow you to identify your strengths and weaknesses in advance and provide you with a baseline score. You must take the GMAT on computer, so it's best to find practice tests that follow the computer adaptive model, or CAT. The CAT determines ability level through a series of adjustments based on performance on questions of different difficulty levels. Your first question will be of moderate difficulty. If you provide a correct answer, the next question will be more difficult, and so on. If you provide an incorrect answer, the next question will be easier, etc.

    • 4

Use all course materials. You will likely receive a study book, a book or disc of practice tests and access to online resources. Prep course curriculae are developed holistically and course materials are designed to complement one another.

    • 5

Ask questions. Whether meeting with a tutor online or attending class with several other test takers, actively participate in the learning process. Keep track of problem areas or confusing practice questions during home studying, and discuss those items with your instructor. If you're uncomfortable speaking up in class, use online resources like live chat and email for inquiries.

    • 6

Understand terms of the course's satisfaction guarantee. Most reputable GMAT prep courses guarantee score improvement and will refund money or allow a student to retake the class if their test results are unsatisfactory. The guarantee is usually valid only if a student attends all classes, completes all homework and participates in class.

Tips & Warnings

  • GMAT prep courses cost anywhere from just under $100 to over $2000. The best courses are usually more expensive and are well worth the money for most people.

  • GMAT scores are only good for 5 years. If you take the test several times within a 5 year period, all scores will be reported to schools where you send your application materials.

  • Some test prep companies group classes according to skill level. This feature appeals to individuals who need a lot of individual attention and to those who enter the course with a lot of knowledge and primarily need a quick refresher course.
