How to Write an Instructional Booklet

There may be a subject that you are knowledgeable about, but you don't want to waste readers' time with another book that is full of redundancies because your editor said you needed more words in order for your subject to qualify as a book. But you do have enough words for a booklet. So, you fire your editor, and decide to write a booklet instead. Where do you start?

Instructions

1. Decide on your subject matter. Focusing on what you will write about is important. Write about one subject per booklet.

2. Make the subject of your booklet specific. Instead of writing "How to See Spain on a Budget," write "How to See Spain's Wine Regions on $10 a Day," or some other specific topic. "How to see Spain on a Budget," would cover an entire book, and those who were just interested in the one subject could spend $30 just to find out about the wine country.

3. Write an outline. Yes, the dreaded outline. It doesn't have to be the outline of junior high and high school days. It can be as simple as numbering your ideas 1, 2, 3 and so forth, with horizontal hatch marks under each number for specifics. Some sort of outline is helpful.

4. Purchase booklet software to write and make your job easier and quicker. (See our Resources Section for recommendations).

5. Write your booklet. Write down everything you know about your subject. Then, you can hire a new editor.
