Rainy days are often a parent's worst nightmare, however new craft ideas, like sponge painting, can turn a never-ending day into a day full of memories. Children love to create and learn new things, and sponge painting offers many ways to engage your children and allow them to use their imaginations. Give your children sponges, paint and some direction and let them take the reigns to show you what they can create.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut squares, triangles, rectangles and circles out of household sponges. After your child has had the fun of making a sponge painting, allow them to trace the outline of the shapes with markers or crayons to help them learn how to draw basic shapes.

    • 2

Buy or cut sponges into specific shapes like stars, moons, hearts or circles and ask your child to make a picture using these shapes. If your child is old enough, ask them to make up a story about their picture, or even make a little book.

    • 3

Sponge paint hard boiled eggs for Easter. Hold the egg for smaller children, or allow your child to hold the egg in one hand while using the other to dab the egg with a paint-filled sponge.

    • 4

Fill a piece of paper with sponge-painted circles and let your child make pictures out of the circles. You may need to do one yourself to get their imaginations going. Ideas include: smiling faces, flowers, a sun, or a clock.

    • 5

Tape off an area of your child's bedroom wall and allow them to create their own sponge painting within the taped-off area. If you make two rectangles, one inside the other, about an inch apart, you can also sponge paint a border to frame your child's original art.

Tips & Warnings

  • If attempting sponge painting with young children, try using washable finger paint. Young children often decide the sponges aren't as fun as fingers, so think ahead.
