Step 1
Go to the American Sailing Association (ASA) website and look over the American Sailing Association standards of certification. These standards are found in the ASA Official International Log Book. Contact ASA for more information on classes that teach the specific sections of the standards.

Step 2
Meet the sailing instructor prerequisites. The prerequisites include getting CPR certification, be 18 years of age, have three years of sailing experience, be an ASA member, and be able to teach. CPR certification can be obtained through the American Red Cross. Contact your local chapter and go to the class. Apply for ASA membership online at the ASA website.

Step 3
Attend the required classes for ASA sailing instructor certification. Attend the Basic Keelboat Sailing Clinic, Basic Coastal Cruising Instructor Clinic, Bareboat Chartering Instructor clinic, Coastal navigation Instructor clinic, Advanced Coastal Cruising Instructor clinic, and four more clinics each costing about $250. Each class builds upon each other and must be taken in order.

Fill out the ASA instructor application. This can be found and submitted online. Submit the form and wait for a response.
