Competing in AMA motocross, or MX as it is sometimes called, is a widely varied sport for the entire family. There are classes for bikes from 50cc to over 450cc and you can compete as young as the age of 4 until you can no longer stand the bumps, bruises and contusions. Here is how to get started so you can compete in AMA motocross events.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • MX motorcycle, appropriate cc for the class you'll be competing in
  • MX helmet
  • Leathers and other protective safety equipment
  • A couple of acres to practice your moves
  1. Step 1

Do some research. Buy some DVDs on motocross racing because this will give you some idea what you are getting yourself into. You'll see first hand all the spills MX racers take and just how often they take them. Check out Amazon for titles such as "AMA Superbike Championship 2006" and to see real life racing.

  2. Step 2

Decide which class you'd like to compete in. Some of the classes have age restrictions, so be sure you select a class that suits you best.

  3. Step 3

Get an AMA MX approved motorcycle and all the safety gear for your class. Be sure to remember things like shield covers which come in handy when your helmet becomes caked with mud. Make sure you are in compliance with all the bike regulations.

  4. Step 4

Check out the course. MX racing is done on a natural dirt course, so of course you'll need those knobby ties for traction.

  5. Step 5

Practice your moves. Find a local stomping ground with a few hills and turns so you can brush up on your turns, jumps and especially your landings. When you feel that you have your moves down pat, register for your local amateur AMA MX event and compete in the class of your choice.
