In a large mixing bowl that can be used with the electric mixer, place the softened butter and the sugar. Mix the two ingredients with the paddle attachment that came with the mixer until they are nice and fluffy. Do this for 4 minutes.

    • 2

Add the eggs, one at a time, beating them into the mixture. Using a sifter, sift the flour, baking soda and salt into a large mixing bowl. Turn your mixer on low speed and gradually add the flour mixture. You will want to alternate this with the buttermilk. Continue alternating these ingredients until all the ingredients are mixed well together.

Take some plastic wrap and wrap the dough up in and then put it in the refrigerator for an hour up to overnight.

    • 4

Color the sanding sugar by placing a few tablespoons of it in a small bowl. Take the petal dust and mix it into the sugar using a toothpick. Keep mixing until you get it to the color you desire.

    • 5

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Take 2 baking sheets and line them with parchment paper.

    • 6

Flour a flat surface and your rolling pin. Take the cold dough and roll it to 1/8 of an inch thick. Use your heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out cookie shapes.

    • 7

Place the cookies on the baking sheets and cool them in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes, sprinkle some of the sugar sand on them. Put in the oven and bake them for about 10 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer to a cooling rack, let cool and enjoy.
