Different universities have different programs of specialization in their anthropology programs. It's necessary to research which schools offer your preferred area of study, and under what faculty you would like to study. You must also plan how to finance your education, so see if your school of choice offers help.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Submit transcripts for all degrees completed to the university that offers a Ph.D. in your specialization. You must have at least a Bachelors degree to be accepted into any Ph.D. program. Most universities require at least a 3.2 GPA.
Step2
Submit letters of recommendation, your Statement of Intent, and Graduate Record Examination scores. Each university and program has their own acceptance criteria, but generally you need three letters of recommendation, a thorough statement of your goals and a combined GRE of 1100.
Step3
Meet with your assigned advisor before registering for classes. You must select an Advisory Committee Chair and then the rest of the advisory committee. After completing core requirements, passing a preliminary exam and filing your dissertation proposal your admittance to candidacy is based on your advisory committee's recommendation.
Step4
Begin constructing your thesis. From this point on, most all of your research and study should be centered on your thesis. You need to demonstrate your ability to conduct original, independent research that advances the scholarship in the field of anthropology. Your dissertation must effectively communicate your findings. Some people hire professional editors to review their dissertation before final print.
Step5
Complete your dissertation and schedule your dissertation defense. You must present and defend your doctoral dissertation in front of a panel of experts. The defense is also usually open to the public. After a successful presentation and defense, you can present copies of your dissertation to the university library according to their requirements. Once you've completed this, you can receive your degree.
