The plectrum banjo differs from the tenor or 5-string in that it is a 4-string instrument with 22 frets and a longer neck than the tenor. This allows the musician to use the first string for more notes, and more lax is used when tuning the first string. The opinion of some is that playing the plectrum banjo is a better choice for soloists.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Decide whether you have a particular style of music you want to play.
Step2
Search your local music store for books, CDs or cassettes on playing a plectrum banjo. This will give you a wealth of information on tuning, exercises and songs. If you know what style you want to play, stick to instructional information on that.
Step3
Check the library for books on playing the plectrum banjo as an alternative.
Step4
Experiment with different methods of tuning. Tuning the banjo in 5ths and CDGB is the standard. However, many musicians prefer to try other methods and, as a result, make beautiful music.
Step5
Learn your chords and practice them until you have mastered creating clean sound.
Step6
Consider finding a banjo instructor who can help you. You can also search the Internet for online courses (see resources).
Step7
Listen to cassettes and/or watch musicians play the plectrum banjo. This will help you mimic what you hear and see. It's OK to sound like other people until you find your own sound.
Step8
Practice tenaciously. The more you get to know your instrument, the better you become.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tuning your banjo should be the first thing you do each time you practice.
