Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Decide on the size of the piano you are looking for and know what piano dealers call that particular size, so you can shop wisely. Make a list of the features that are important to you as well.
Step2
Research upright piano dealers to browse their selection and prices. Start with well-known companies, like Altenburg Pianos. Compare features to ensure you are getting all of the important features you are looking for.
Step3
Compare prices of the piano style and features you want among piano dealers. If you are only looking to buy new, you should be ready to visit a showroom to test products and purchase. If you want to save a little money and don't mind used, read on.
Step4
Search for used instrument or piano sites that sell used through dealers, private party or music schools and organizations. Ebay, Shopzilla and online auction sites are all good choices.
Step5
Check the local classifieds, craigslist and contact music schools for additional used options. When buying used, see the item first-hand before making a purchase.

Tips & Warnings

  • When comparing online and offline prices, remember to account for shipping cost.
  • Pianos are considered assets because of their high price tag, talk to your insurance agent about adding coverage to your home owners insurance to cover the new asset.
  • Uprights are designated by height: Spinet pianos (36"), Console pianos (40"), Studio pianos (45") and Professional pianos (48" and up).
