An internship is one of the key ways to break into an industry and work into a company. Turning an internship into a career can be a smooth transition from graduating college into your first career employment. Use these steps to learn more about turning an internship into a career.

From Quick Guide: Internships
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get an internship you love and where you could see yourself working for many years to come. This should include great research and help from an internship counselor. Look for an internship in your area of study; that way you have the education for the job upon graduation.

  2. Step 2

Use your internship time effectively. While working at the company, learn as much as you can and make important connections with company heads and supervisors while you also work as hard as you possibly can. Show great attendance, attentiveness and energy, and offer to help people from all different departments if allowed.

  3. Step 3

Express your interest in a job with the company before the end of your internship time and graduation. Let the boss know you want to work there, tell him of the job that you have been doing, express your interest in the future of the company and where you see yourself fitting in. Use this meeting as a job interview and come prepared.

  4. Step 4

Submit an amazing resume with letters of reference from professors in your area of study and possibly a co-worker from the company you are interning at. Check in often and make sure you have done your homework about the company to show that you can be an asset now and in the future.
