Step 1
Carpool. Don't go it alone. If you live far enough away from campus to warrant a drive, share a ride with others. If you walk, walk with someone. The buddy system, though enforced in Kindergarten, is the best policy at any age.
-
Step 2
Practice smart walking/bicycling. Be aware of what is going on around you at all times. Carry a cell phone or personal alarm. Make sure a friend, family member or roommate knows where you are between classes. Be on the phone on your way home.
-
Step 3
Use well lit paths and common walkways. Don't walk alone late at night. Using common sense is the biggest factor to staying safe while commuting to and from college. If you have to walk at night, call the campus security office to see if a night security guard is available to walk you to your dorm, your car or wherever else it is you are going.
-
Step 4
Ask your student services office if they offer a shuttle service. Some colleges offer this to take you to your car, dorm or other area on campus. This makes your commute not only shorter, but safer.
-
Step 5
Use the local Metro system. This will save you time and make the commute a little safer for you. But, always stay vigilant about your environment and the people around you.
