Step 1
Become a strong swimmer from the start. The earlier you learn to swim, the better. Even high school swim teams are highly competitive and full of strong swimmers with precision. Your training should include swimming year round, not just for summer fun.
-
Step 2
Swim competitively before high school. Many school districts may not offer swim team before the high school level, but some recreation centers and other city resources may. You may also be able to find a swim training school or camp for preparation before tryouts.
-
Step 3
Work hard throughout tryouts. Tryouts will normally consist of multiple laps and competing against other prospective swim team members. Work hard throughout the entire process and make it known that swimming is your passion and you want to compete.
-
Step 4
Stay on the team. Getting on the team is half the battle; you will then have to learn how to juggle academics, student life, swim practice and competitions. This is difficult and you are required by the school district to keep your grades at an acceptable level to be involved in school sports.
