Cars that use diesel fuel are better for the environment and cheaper to operate than gasoline powered cars. The cost of diesel cars is slightly higher than comparable gasoline models. Compare the estimated mileage per gallon of diesel fuel, by factoring in the length of time it takes to recover the initial higher purchase price and the estimated mileage provided by the car's manufacturer.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start your research on gas mileage for diesel cars at a trusted site, MSN Autos. Their "Diesels Going Green" article provides a good starting point for getting the facts on new diesel technologies and the vehicles that are available for purchase in the U.S.

  2. Step 2

Note the manufacturers and car model names listed in this article. Choose models from new contenders that have entered this market or intend to soon. Compare these vehicles to popular Mercedes Benz diesel powered cars, now sold by Daimler Chrysler.

  3. Step 3

Select the vehicle model, year and make from drop down boxes at MSN. Search, using text boxes, if the vehicle that you want to compare isn't listed in the drop boxes.

  4. Step 4

Register for a Windows Live account to save your results. This can be useful when you are ready to narrow your list down to a few choices. You can also access your saved data from any computer with an Internet connection.

  5. Step 5

Get information on new cleaner diesel technologies and vehicles at the Discover Alternatives website. You can find the best alternative fuel cars, including diesels that are currently in production. You can get additional links to pre-production plans for many auto manufacturers here too.

  6. Step 6

Compare diesel vehicle mileage with gasoline, hybrid and green vehicles at the U.S. government's Fuel Economy site.

Tips & Warnings
  • Note that 5 states, New York, California, Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine have emission restrictions that prohibit the sale of diesel vehicles.
