When looking for a gas powered radio-controlled car, you've got to realize you're not really looking for a toy. There are a lot of issues to consider when making a purchase.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Determine your budget. Most RC gas-powered cars run from $200 to $1000. The higher-end vehicles will run faster and are, often, more durable. However, it's thought that the more affordable models are perfect for beginners because they provide such a step up from electric-controlled cars in speed and agility.
Step2
Choose the type of vehicle you want. Most RC gas-powered vehicles come in three different types: cars, trucks and buggies. Cars can race at faster speeds on tracks or on the street, but damage more easily when an accident occurs. Trucks can maneuver the jumps and rougher terrain better. They are good for beginners due to their durability. Buggies have the best acceleration, speed and handling.
Step3
Pick between pre-built or build-your-own versions. The pre-built versions are usually ready to go when you purchase them. They include the nitro engine, started with a pull action, the radio control and all other equipment necessary to operate. Build-your-own-versions often require additional accessory purchases in addition to the kit that you purchased for assembly. Beginners should start with a pre-assembled version from Traxxas, Sportwerks, Team Associated or HPI Racing.
Step4
Purchase other items necessary. Depending on your vehicle, other items may be required. These items should be listed in your user's manual. Additionally, it's wise to buy nitro fuel and nitro starter kits.
