Ultrasonic microdermabrasion is an increasingly popular alternative to crystal and crystal-free microdermabrasion techniques. Ultrasonic microdermabrasion uses vibrations instead of traditional abrading methods to steadily remove dead skin cells from a patient's face to leave fresh-looking skin.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Call dermatologists' offices and inquire about ultrasonic microdermabrasion services. Some dermatologists do not have the technology needed to perform ultrasonic microdermabrasion.

  2. Step 2

Talk to the dermatologist about your skin. Tell the dermatologist why you would like ultrasonic microdermabrasion and what type of results you expect to see from it. Your doctor can determine if you're a good candidate for ultrasonic microdermabrasion by discussing your goals and inspecting your skin.

  3. Step 3

Discuss long-term treatment options. Some dermatologists suggest that their patients undergo a series of treatments to maintain results. Book a series of sessions and ask about discounts offered if you'd like to pay in advance.

  4. Step 4

At your first session, relax in the patient's chair as the dermatologist uses ultrasonic vibrations to remove dead skin cells, kill facial bacteria and stimulate new cell growth in your skin. Remain calm during the procedure and don't be intimidated by the slight vibrations that you feel.

  5. Step 5

Follow any directions that your dermatologist may give you after treatment. Ultrasonic microdermabrasion is usually painless and requires no recovery time, but your dermatologist may advise you to put SPF 30 sunscreen on your face and stay out of the sun for a day or two.

on 10/28/2008 I just started doing ultrasonic microdermabrasion in my practice. I find it is much more gentle on the skin because it is a "wet" peel. The skin has to be wet while gliding the ultrasonic spatula on the skin. I have had great results on patients with active acne and Rosacea, who are not good candidates for traditional microdermabrasion methods. I you have any metal implants in the face or jaw you should not have ultrasonic microdermabrasion.
