Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Go the Windows Control Panel and look for the Windows Firewall control icon. The method for reaching the control panel varies based on the version of Windows you are using, but it should always be easily accessed through the Windows Start Menu.
Step2
Look over the Windows Security Center and select the section marked Firewall. Choose to turn it on or off. If you choose "on" decide whether to allow exceptions. This will let some programs through the wall. You should allow some exceptions, or many basic programs will loose functionality.
Step3
Click on the "Exceptions" tab to further configure the firewall. You can add programs to the exceptions list by clicking "Add Program" at the bottom of the window. This gives a program unrestricted access through the firewall. If the program you are looking for is not on the list, use the "Browse" button at the bottom of the window to find it.
Step4
Select "Add Port" or the "Advanced" tab if you are familiar with basic firewall functions. These let you permanently open a computer port, modify firewall conditions for different connections or modify and log Internet security procedures. All of these functions are advanced and shouldn't be changed by novices.
