How to Survive Dating an Airman

Dating an airman is full of excitement, but can take special effort. It's not like dating a classmate, someone you work with or the guy down the street. Because of his choice to dedicate his life (or at least a few years of it) to the United States Air Force, your life will change, too.

1. Respect his commitment to the country. First and foremost, your boyfriend is a member of the United States Air Force. It's not simply a profession. It's a way of life.
2. Be flexible. Airmen can work swing shifts, overnight shifts and weekends. So, Friday or Saturday night may not be "date night." Squeeze in time whenever you can. If something comes up, he may also have to break a date. Remember, the Air Force comes first.
3. Understand his restrictions. Your boyfriend may leave work upset or frustrated. As a woman, you want to talk it all out and solve his problems. Know that he may not be allowed to tell you much, because of classified information. He may have no choice but to keep it bottled up inside. Don't take it personally.
4. Communicate as much as possible to help you get through some of the more frustrating parts of dating an Airman. Yes, he has a commitment to the USA, but, that doesn't mean he shouldn't keep you in the loop as much as he can.
5. Support his life choice. Given the seriousness of his service, it's important your boyfriend have you by his side. Don't resent his duties. Value the time you have together.
6. Be prepared to move if the relationship progresses. Airmen typically move all over the country and the world. If you plan to someday marry yours, know that you may have to live far away from your friends and family. Be brave. It's an exciting opportunity.
