Golf remains one of the hardest games to play for two main reasons: lack of knowledge and lack of practice. Without knowledge, you cannot practice effectively, and you will probably not improve. Setting up to hit the ball is the basis of the golf swing, and it is often done incorrectly. Here is how to do it correctly.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand so that the position of the ball on the ground is approximately one-third of the way between the points of your hip bones and closer to the target side hip.

  2. Step 2

Place the clubhead on the ground so that the leading edge of the club's sole is perpendicular to the target line.

  3. Step 3

Grasp the club so that a straight line exists down your target-side arm and the club shaft from shoulder to clubhead.

  4. Step 4

Bend your legs so that your left arm hangs comfortably and your arm is between your shoulder and your chin.

  5. Step 5

Position your shoulders on line toward the target as you grasp the club with your right hand.

  6. Step 6

Maintain the straight line of your arm and club shaft.

  7. Step 7

Keep your head slightly behind the ball along the target line.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your hands are in front of your navel, you are setup incorrectly. Your hands should be almost in front of your target-side thigh.
  • Maintain the straight line of the clubshaft and your target-side arm to swing correctly.
  • Be careful when reading golf instructional material. Often different sources give conflicting advice or instruction. Your best bet is to find an instructor you can work with.
