Chimney caps are the metal mesh covers placed over chimneys. They keep creatures and debris out of a home by blocking this access. Chimney caps also prevent damage from water that falls into the chimney. The caps require an inspection at least once a year to be sure they are effective.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ensure that the chimney cap is properly attached. Extremely high winds can knock a cap loose or damage the metal. Tighten the anchor screws or reapply sealant for a good fit if it's not securely attached.

  2. Step 2

Look for rust on the chimney cap. Most lose their effectiveness after 3 to 4 years and need to be replaced because of rust. Chimney caps made of stainless steel or copper are available with a lifetime warranty.

  3. Step 3

Check the chimney cap for blockages. Clear away any debris that has blown against the mesh. Clogged chimney caps are a fire hazard and lower the efficiency of your fireplace.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take a pad and pencil with you when you check your chimney cap. If you need to replace it, you can write down exactly what you need to do so.
  • Inspect your chimney cap more often if you live near salt water.
