Choosing which hair highlighting product to use can be a frustrating process. The purpose of highlighting hair is to bring out some aspects of your hair color and hide others. When choosing a highlighter for your hair, take into consideration if you have gray hairs, if you have permed your hair or if it is already color treated.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at the highlighting products that are available at the local grocery store. The boxes will tell you what type of hair it is suitable for, such as graying or permed hair.

  2. Step 2

Consider the season. Red is a popular choice in the fall for its ability to meld well with fall fashion colors.

  3. Step 3

Complimenting your complexion and eye color is a key to successful highlighting.

  4. Step 4

Examine your wardrobe to determine the type of highlights you should use.

  5. Step 5

Talk to your hairdresser if, after considering all your options, you're still not sure about which product to use. Taking a professional's advice is better than guessing.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are nervous about permanently changing the color of your hair, there are products that are semi-permanent. They wash out in 8-10 hair washes.
  • Colors like blues, greens and black are considered cool while colors like reds, browns and oranges are considered warm.
  • Don't wash your hair the day you plan to highlight it. The natural oils in the hair help protect it from damage while you are dying it.
  • Do not skip the allergy test. By doing the allergy test you can save yourself major headaches down the road.
