Step 1
Contact your local Internet provider to see if they are offering municipal Wi-Fi in your area. This may be as easy as checking out their website, like Earthlink; or call and ask a representative. If your provider does not yet offer municipal Wi-Fi in your area and it is important to you, maybe it is time to start shopping around for a different provider.
-
Step 2
Call your city department to see if they have installed municipal Wi-Fi and ask about the coverage range and provider. Check with the city planner first, if you have not heard about any installation going on, as it may be in the plan. If there is no plan to install municipal Wi-Fi, consider approaching the city council to create one.
-
Step 3
Consider your university. If you are a student, a lot of universities are installing municipal Wi-Fi services, since many of them operate as their own mini-cities of sorts. Student Services should have this information. If your university does not have Wi-Fi, consider starting a campaign to get it.

Step 4
Check out JiWire. They have a directory of Wi-Fi hotspots, so you can find one near you. This is slightly different than municipal Wi-Fi, but the information could be invaluable for travelers.
