Eco-luxury is a lifestyle that allows for luxurious and high-end comforts. This lifestyle is sustainable and environmentally friendly. Many modern furniture and decor manufacturers make items out of harvested or recycled materials. Eco-luxury products are available to reduce your ecological footprint and is increasingly available for a variety of different income levels. It primarily caters to those with extra money to spend on an eco-luxury home.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Install sustainable wood, bamboo or cork flooring throughout your house. Select flooring backer-board without any toxic chemicals or glues. Install the floor according to manufacturer's instructions.

  2. Step 2

Purchase organic beds, non-toxic bed frames, and organic bedding. Use wool for breathable water-resistance, or for comforter and pillow fill. Find organic towels, shower curtains and bath mats for the bathroom.

  3. Step 3

Use sustainable material blinds, window coverings, upholstery and other textiles. Find a seamstress to make custom curtains and linens out of wholesale organic fabric.

  4. Step 4

Install individual tankless water heaters for each bathroom, the kitchen and the laundry room. Use solar water heaters if possible. Find low-flush (2.26 gallons per flush or less) toilets.

  5. Step 5

Put solar paneling on your roof and on your swimming pool pump and heater. Solar panels are now available in smooth, black finishes to reduce the visual impact on your roof.

  6. Step 6

Deck out your closet with the latest eco fashions. Designers increasingly include organic and sustainable materials in their clothing lines. Check that your fabrics are 100% organic and made without the use of sweatshop labor.

  7. Step 7

Travel and stay at official Eco Luxury lodges, or certified green hotels and dine at green restaurants on the road (see Resources).

  8. Step 8

Buy only hybrid cars, and use your bicycle or electric scooter for local trips.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask around to find a general contractor who understands environmentally friendly living. Use this contractor to do all of the installation work, or to work with a designer to make the right materials choices.
  • Host environmentally friendly dinner parties. Serve local organic vegetarian food and organic wines using your recycled glassware and organic linens.
  • Shop locally whenever possible. Consider the transportation impact of purchasing materials from far away.
