How to Build Dorm Room Furniture
The dorm room is a little 100 square foot space where the college student will spend at least one year of school. Yet, despite the space being so limited, you can still fit all the furniture any college student needs, especially a loft bed and desk. Here's how you can build these two important pieces of dorm furniture. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Figure out how much space you have. Take a tape measure and actually measure how big the room is. If you're sharing a dorm with a roommate, only measure half of that space.
-
2
Call the director of your dorm building. Some college dorms will not allow students to bring in loft beds. Other college dorms already have a pre-approved loft kit available. Make sure you know your dorm rules and regulations before you start.

3
Figure out how big your dorm furniture should be and where it would go. If you're an athletic studies major, you might want more floor space. You might have a small desk next to your loft bed, and use the space under the bed to stretch. If you're a computer science or architect major, you might want a much bigger desk. You can put in underneath the loft bed.

4
Get a range of measurements that you want your dorm furniture to be within. This will help you pick furniture plans that will work in the space.
-
5
Get some plans or a furniture kit. If you feel comfortable building wood furniture from scratch, you can go to Free Wood Working Plans' website and get plans there. If you prefer to work with a kit, you can get your college room-sized loft bed through "College Bed Lofts'" website.

Prepare for building. Buy all of the tools and materials you need to build your dorm furniture. Precut each piece of wood according to the plans. If you need to drill holes in the wood, do this now. Leave the actual assembly for when you get to the college dorm itself.

Arrive at college and put your furniture together. Using the wood you've already cut and pre-drilled, put everything together. Doing this last step while you're at the dorm will save you having to carry and transport bulky furniture to college.

Tips & Warnings
Tell your roommate your plans to build furniture before you actually do it. This will help keep your roommate from panicking when he walks in to see a construction zone.
Lay down a tarp when you're finishing putting together your dorm furniture. This will save you on cleanup time later.
Make sure you vacuum as soon as your done. You don't want you or your college chums breathing in sawdust.
