How to Write an Accounting Test

An accounting exam should test one's knowledge base of accounting principles and terms as well as how to apply them to practical and real-life situations. It should not overfocus on specific formulas. A few tips to help you create an effective accounting test follow.

      Read some accounting books and review past homework assignments and tests for ideas in terms of wording and what topics to include. Be sure the test questions use the course outline as a guide for what to include.

      Decide exactly what subject to cover in the test. An accounting test can be general and cover a range of topics from Managerial Accounting, which emphasizes terms and definitions, to Cost Accounting, which focuses on how to properly perform journal entries.

      Choose a format and question types. Consider including multiple choice questions in which the test provides a list of answer choices to problems in which the test taker works through the problem and shows their solution. Include a problem-solving question or two that requires the test taker to perform journal entries and other bookkeeping tasks.

      Consider creating problems that incorporate accounting software used in many businesses such as PeopleSoft, Peachtree or Great Plains. (See Resources below.) Present some of these test questions electronically or online so the accounting test is more authentic in terms of using the software in real-life situations.
