Most universities offer graduate degrees in exercise physiology. A Master of Science in exercise physiology allows one to understand the physiological effects of exercise on the human body. Exercise physiology degrees prepare the student for a career in adult fitness programs, fitness management, cardiac rehabilitation and entrance into doctoral programs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Obtain an undergraduate degree. In order to be admitted into a graduate program in exercise physiology one must first achieve a graduate degree in a related field. Examples of such degrees would include a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology, exercise science, physical education or athletic training.

  2. Step 2

Complete curriculum that is required by accepted schools. Universities may differ in their curriculum but on average most programs require a minimum of 33 credits, which equals about 2 years of school.

  3. Step 3

Write a thesis. For most schools, a thesis is a part of the curriculum. A thesis is a research paper with a specific focus, which in this case is exercise physiology.

  4. Step 4

Prepare for hands-on experience. Graduate degrees are designed to assist you in the real world. Therefore, laboratory experience along with teaching adult fitness classes and conducting exercise testing may be required.

Tips & Warnings
  • Decide what you want to do with your degree prior to starting the graduate program so that you know what areas to concentrate on.
  • Many graduate programs offer graduate assistantships, which are paid positions. As a graduate assistant your job is to counsel and help undergraduate classmates. You may be required to teach, as well.
