How to Find an Acid Reflux Medication

With the storm of acid reflux medications bombarding us in magazines and on television, choosing the right one can be a difficult task. Even knowing where to start can be intimidating. But if you break it down, you can find a medication that soothes your stomach without giving you a headache instead.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Do preliminary research. Internet research is a great way to get a lot of information on acid reflux medications. You can also get information from your doctor's office where you've been seen for acid reflux. Start looking at what the main ingredients are, because many of the medications out there are just slightly different versions of the same thing.
Step2
Talk to your doctor. She has insight that you won't be able to find from brochures and websites. She's familiar with your individual medical history, as well as which medications work for which symptoms, and how much you should be taking and how often. Doctors also have information on the cost and your insurance information.
Step3
Decide, with your doctor, what medication is best for you. If you suffer from occasional heartburn, he might recommend antacids like Maalox, Rolaids and Tums, while if you suffer from an inflamed esophagus he might recommend an H-2 receptor blocker like Zantac, Pecid or Axid.
Step4
Fill your prescription, buy your over-the-counter medications and take them on schedule. You'll feel better soon and keep your acid reflux in check.
