Cross stitching is fun and easy to learn. It is quickly becoming the preferred form of crafting. For some people, cross stitching is very relaxing. If you can make an "X" with thread, then you can learn to cross stitch. Counted cross stitch is the most common type of cross stitching.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select the pattern that you would like to cross stitch. Get all the colors of thread needed for the pattern.

  2. Step 2

Choose the fabric that you would like to use. Aida 14 is the most common fabric used in counted cross stitch. Find the center of your fabric by folding it lengthwise and then by bringing the bottom to the top.

  3. Step 3

Make your first stitch. You can make a row of half stitches (///) and then half stitch back (\\\), or you can complete each X as you go.

  4. Step 4

After you finish your design, wash the fabric in cool water, dry by rolling it up in a terry towel. While it is still damp, you can iron it between two towels.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that all the cross stitches are crossed in the same direction.
  • Instead of making knots in your thread, hold the end of the thread tight against the back of your fabric and make the first cross stitch. This will make the back neat.
  • To end your stitches, draw the needle through two or more stitches in the back of your pattern before cutting the thread. This will add to the neatness of the back of your design.
