Step 1
Decide that your preference is to capture mice in your home without killing them. Your decision will not only keep from killing a mouse painfully, but will also protect other animals from harmful poisons used in some types of mousetraps.
-
Step 2
Research the different types of humane mouse traps, how they work and different price levels and decide which type is best for your needs.
-
Step 3
Set up the trap according to the manufacturer's instructions. Bait the trap with something to entice your unwanted visitor, such as peanut butter or saltine crackers.
-
Step 4
Check the humane trap every 6 to 8 hours. Checking the trap just once a day could lead to a mouse dying from dehydration, which would defeat the purpose of buying a humane mousetrap. Once you've caught a mouse, you can transport it to where you intend to release it.
-
Step 5
Release any mice you have caught in a field or forest at least 5 miles from your home, and preferably anyone else's. If you release them too close to another home, the next homeowner might not feel as kindly toward mice and not use a humane trap.
-
Step 6
Feel that you have done something good and set a good example for your children at the same time.
