President's Day is the one day each year when we celebrate two of our founding fathers' birthdays- Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. One man helped create a new nation while the other brought our nation back together.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Remember Abraham Lincoln by visiting the Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. and remembering the man who gave his life to free slaves. The Ford Theater is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except for Dec. 25. There is no admission fee and no reservations. The theater closes periodically for rehearsals and private events, so call ahead for the daily schedule (202-426-6924).
Step2
Visit a line on the underground railroad and learn about the life of slaves in America. Abraham Lincoln lived in a family and time that was torn apart over the need to free men from other men. Honor presidents throughout our history by learning about freedom. Colonial Williamsburg puts on performances discussing slavery. Visit the National Parks System website (see Resources below) for underground railroad locations.
Step3
Visit President Washington's home in Mount Vernon to learn about the man who helped form our United States. Admission is under $15 for adults and under $10 for children. Mount Vernon is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day of the year including holidays. There are several special events planned so call ahead.
Step4
Honor all the presidents by reading a biography or the selected speeches of presidents you admire or would like to learn more about. Think about what they said and the lessons we can learn from their lives.
