A hunting dog competition basically pits dogs against each other to find prey. The dogs may be judged on appearance, obedience and other factors. Organizing a hunting dog competition is easy, and it can work well as a fund raiser.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the types of dogs you will permit to enter. There are a number of competitions already out there. Some focus specifically on a breed, such as the beagle. Others are more open. You will need to determine for yourself what dogs you will allow in.

  2. Step 2

Find judges. In this type of competition, the identity of the judges can determine how many people enter. Choose judges who have trained or bred hunting dogs and have previous judging experience. Look for judges who value different attributes so that you are not favoring one style over another.

  3. Step 3

Select a location and a back-up site. Look into various locations around your area. Consider privately-owned property as well as public property open to hunting. You should have a back-up plan in case the first one falls through at any point along the way. Make the sites similar in make-up so that the logistics are similar should you need to make a switch.

  4. Step 4

Get permits, insurance and other necessities. For this type of event, your local government likely will require some type of liability insurance. Find out now what you will need so that you can get the paperwork together.

  5. Step 5

Form a committee to help you with various responsibilities. Each member should commit to overseeing a specific task, such as marketing, securing licenses or checking in contestants.

  6. Step 6

Advertise your event. This crucial step will determine your success. Get the word out through local kennel clubs, hunting clubs and word of mouth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your competition likely will need two years or more to be really successful. Set clear and attainable goals for yourself.
  • Set milestones along the way, at least monthly, to gauge your progress.
