Not all truck enthusiasts are able to restore a 4 x 4 or ATV—it requires patience and a realistic ability to look at the big picture. It is common that once you alter one thing on a vehicle it leads to places in the car body and engine that you never even imagined.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn all you can about tire modifications before you make them on your own truck or ATV. Realize that there will be other adjustments that will need to be made.

  2. Step 2

Select tires that you like, but that also don't change the ride of your truck or ATV drastically.

  3. Step 3

Adjust the speed-sensing device—with your new tires this device will not work properly without recalibration.

  4. Step 4

Decide if you want a smooth ride or if you can live with the bumpy ride large tread tires give off. If you want a smooth ride you will have to change out your shocks.

  5. Step 5

Determine the quality of your brakes—larger tires take more power to stop. They also take a lot of power to turn.

  6. Step 6

Take into consideration that larger tires will decrease the power of your truck or ATV.

  7. Step 7

Expand the axel size once you put larger tires on your truck or ATV. Bigger tires weigh more and put more weight on the axel.

Tips & Warnings
  • Think about your modifications—whether they are going to make your truck or ATV no longer functional.
  • If your tires are too big you won't be able to turn them without a major lift kit.
  • Know what you are getting into with tire modifications before you start.
