How to Clean Hairspray off a Curling Iron

A common way to damage a curling iron is to allow caked-on hairspray to stay on the curling iron. Over time, the curling iron will become sticky and thick; not something that you want to put in your hair. Before throwing out that curling iron, follow the steps below, which outline several methods you can use to remove the hairspray from your curling iron.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Rag
    • Rubbing alcohol
    • Ammonia
    • Cotton ball
    • Nail polish remover
    • Oven cleaner
      • 1

Unplug the curling iron and allow it to completely cool before attempting to clean the hairspray from the curling iron.

      • 2

Get a rag slightly damp and gently wipe the curling iron with the rag. This will remove any new hairspray residue that has become stuck to the curling iron.

      • 3

Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol onto your rag and wipe the curling iron with it to get rid of more stubborn hairspray residue.

      • 4

Gently rub the curling iron with your rag that has a small amount of ammonia on it, if none of the other attempts has gotten rid of the hairspray.

      • 5

Use a cotton ball with nail polish remover containing acetone on it to try another attempt to remove the stubborn hairspray residue.

      • 6

Spray a small amount of oven cleaner onto your rag. Apply the oven cleaner to the curling iron, rubbing the cleaner into the hairspray residue if none of the previous methods has worked in removing the hairspray.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Never attempt to clean a curling iron while it is still plugged in. You may receive an electrical shock.

I have very light blond hair. My curling iron had years of hairspray that was caked on it, which started to fade onto my hair when I was curling it! Scrubbing ammonia on it with an old toothbrush took it right off! No more rust spots on my hair! Thanks!
