How to Restore a 1959 Ford Galaxie

In 1959 the Ford Motor Company introduced its Galaxie model sedan. The Galaxie models were well received for their style and reliability. With an incredible amount of chrome and stainless steel the Galaxie is an icon of mid-century auto design. If you want to get in on these wonderful pieces of history here are a few steps to get you started restoring a 1959 Ford Galaxie.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a 1959 Ford Galaxie to restore; looking on craigslist, eBay or specialized classic car sites for cars in your area is a good idea. Try to find a car that runs. It will make the restoration much simpler.

    • 2

Try creating a workspace about twice as big as the car. You will need to access the car from all angles so leave plenty of room on the outside for access during the restoration.

    • 3

Begin the tear down by removing the vehicle's interior, make note of any damaged parts that went unnoticed before. Clean off all the rust and dirt from the vehicle's component's surfaces.

    • 4

Remove, clean and store all exterior trim remove the exterior body panels and examine for any damages to repair or replace as necessary.

    • 5

Clean the engine yourself or send it to a professional detailer. It is good to get the engine and frame spotless while there is easy access to it. After the engine is cleaned examine the paint on the engine's head and valve-covers; touch-up or repaint as necessary.

    • 6

Select your paint color. If you want the original paint color, look for traces of it as over spray behind interior panels or under the hood. It is wise to consult a professional before painting a car.

    • 7

Replace the exterior trim and add some custom detailing if you like. Some people like to keep there classics looking like they came off of the assembly line, others like to make them a reflection of themselves. It is up to you.
