How to Decorate a Small Office at Work

Many employers allow employees to decorate their offices at their discretion. However, creativity maybe limited depending on workplace culture. The size of the office is also a factor in considering décor within the office. There are a few guidelines that can determine how to decorate a small office at work.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Paint the office a neutral color. Paint will freshen up any space with little impact on the pocket. Choose an appealing, understated color that evokes happiness.
Step2
Bring a few items to decorate the office. For example a lamp, mirror and vase will add color and personality to the space.
Step3
Hang a set of pictures on the wall. Pictures hung on the wall will add visual interest and work well in a small office.
Step4
Add functional pieces that will give the office style and organization. A matching desk, file cabinet, book shelf and trash bin are great additions to a small work area.
Step5
Tie the décor together with a small rug under the desk chair and simple widow treatments. These items can be purchased at a discount store for a reduced price.

Tips & Warnings

  • Decorate with the employer and workplace in mind. If the office culture is professional, choose traditional pieces that the employer would consider to be tasteful. When in doubt, leave it out.
  • Ask permission to paint the walls before investing in paint for work. The employer may not allow any other color than off white.
  • Keep the small office organized. Employers judge employees based on the cleanliness of their office space. Keep papers on the desk to a minimum and do not clutter the work space with knickknacks. Too much of anything can clutter a small office.

on 12/13/2008 If you cannot paint on a wall but crave color-get a thin large plywood piec of wood, paint that a nuetral color (trim with a darker or complementary color by taping of around the edges and painting a 'frame' around in a 2-3 inch strip)hang with small nails on the wall and use that as a background for small prinyts, calendar, etc.-I use larger peices of plywood when decorating , for example my 5 year old granduaghter's bedroom, she wanted pink walls but lives in an aprtment with my sister and they can't paint the walls, but I could hang the wood and created a heart shaped chalkboard as well directly on the wood in a corner and covered large peices of cardboard w/ fabric to create a girly patch work design with hues of pinks on the other wall-added hooks to a few squares for her coat and smaller hooks in another square for hewr necklaces etc. plywood and cardboard my favorites to add colo
