How to Train a Barrel Race Horse

Horses are one of the most beautiful animals around and if you are lucky enough to own one you know that they are exceptionally smart as well. As smart as they are, they need to be trained to do certain tasks. One of these tasks is the barrel race. Barrel racing is done by many show horses and the riders must be taught how to ride their horses through the barrels in just the right way to avoid injury to both themselves and the horses. Be patient and firm with the horses and you will see that this a wonderful sport.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce your horse to the barrels before you try to ride him or her around the course. It will take the horse some time to get used to these obstacles in their path. So be patient.

    • 2

Train your barrel horse by walking him or her around the barrel course at a slow pace. This way the horse will begin to learn the pattern it will be racing.

    • 3

Go through the course, riding the horse at a gentle jog.

    • 4

Start to gain some speed after the horse and you as the rider have become comfortable with the course. The horse needs to realize this is a race so gaining speed is very important.

    • 5

Lope the course. Loping is the speed you want the horse to go on the course. Once you and the horse are able to do this you are ready for competition.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be patient as horses, like many people, cannot be rushed.

  • Do not go around the barrels too fast. You do not want to knock the barrels over.

  • Wear pants--never shorts.

  • Ride with a helmet on and other safety gear to keep help prevent major injuries.
