How to Become a Greensman

A greensman is a person responsible for the landscaping and maintenance of anything "green" on a film set. Many people want to break into the movie industry and becoming a greensman is one way to do it. You get the chance to meet others in the film industry and see how a movie is really made. Follow these steps to become a greensman.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand what a greensman really does. He not only cares for the plants and landscaping, but he builds environments. He may take a particular location and change it to fit a script. Or, he takes a soundstage and changes it to look like a certain locale or environment.

    • 2

Contact and register with an employment agency that provides employees for the movie industry. It will probably be located in the Los Angeles area. Tell them you are willing to work in any job on the production crew; it will allow you to get your foot in the door.

    • 3

Realize that any type of horticulture experience will put you at an advantage when trying to become a greensman. If you're unable to move to Los Angeles to be part of the film industry at the present time, then get a job in a nursery tending plants, which would be good experience.

    • 4

Take horticulture or landscaping classes if you're still in school. Or, get a job with a company that takes care of plants located in businesses. In this job, you travel from business to business throughout the day, caring for plants.

    • 5

Become an extra in the movie industry in order to get acquainted with a movie set and meet others who can help you achieve your goal. Many casting agencies are located in most major cities. Register with them and they will call you for extra work when there's something being filmed in your area.
