Hmm, just saw the comment from a "topalli"? smh..The quran was revealed in arabic (not English or any of the other languages). It has been translated into other languages while the true arabic text is preserved; truly there are some wayward english translations (ex. yusuf Ali), but if you can read the arabic, or have someone with knowledge translate the true arabic text to you..you will then see that the verse mentioned by sbb1 DOES command women to cover; however, if you do not cover then that is your disobedience to your Lord and it is between you and Him (who cares? I don't). Unfortunately we're living in such a lewd society these days that even some of the Muslims have lost their way (Allaahu Musta'3an). Islam is not a burden to me (thank Allaah) and I enjoy covering and obeying my Lord and showing respect to myself and to others. May Allaah guide you, ameen.

When i go to turkey again i will be staying in the heart of a muslim community,to show respect to my man i will dress more moderately than at home, it is not a question of religion whether to wear a scarf or not,i just think i will feel less out of place if i do-so how do i tie this scarf so that i don't look like the queen inspecting her horses , gypsy rose lee or johnny depp? step by step with diagrams would be helpful.

To SBB1 - The author is completely right. The headscarf is OPTIONAL in islam as demonstrated by the fact that very few muslim women in the balkans, near east, or central asia wear it. SBBI uh what's with putting in your own words for "screen themselves compeltely except the eyes." What a bunch of baloney. You are writing your own words into the Quran and should be ashamed of yourself. Please stop lying about what is in the Quran and wri veils came into vogue in the Christian Byzantine Empire and were adopted as a fashion by the wealthy arabs (i.e. as a status symbol for women who do not do manual labor), and then finally by rural arabs LATER. Only 5% of muslims are Arab so please stop pushing your Arab culture on our Muslim world. It is an arabic tradition post-dating the founding of islam and not a muslim tradition. covering the body with clothing is a commandment from Allaah that was given to mankind and no other of what has been created. Both men and women are commanded by Allaah in the Quran to cover what Allaah states as "private parts" of both sexes called "awrah" in the Quran. Allaah says that the entire body of the woman is her awrah (private parts). Allaah states in Noble Quran, "O Prophet!
