Art school fellowships increase the options for talented artists to study and work on their projects, whether they specialize in painting, sculpture, drawing or other disciplines. A fellowship differs from a scholarship in that it's based on merit and academic success during a student's undergraduate years, and is offered to the best candidates, often for continued study abroad.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Leaf through a copy of a reference book. The American Art Directory contains useful information about art fellowships, classes, contests and all other aspects of the artistic community.

  2. Step 2

Visit your local university or art school. Whether you live in a small town or a metropolis like Los Angeles or New York, colleges and art schools offer art fellowships for qualified students. Ask the financial aid counselor or a member of the art department's faculty for details.

  3. Step 3

Search for resources that offer fellowship and scholarship lists and links. Check the student affairs link on your university's website for tips on applying for art fellowships. A general site like My Free Degree offers lists in various fields, including art, but may require registration.

  4. Step 4

Contact organizations like the National Gallery of Art and inquire about available art fellowships. Some specialized and non-profit art organizations offer fellowships in conjunction with colleges. Look at the College Art Association website for more information.

  5. Step 5

Talk to fellow artists and administrators about available fellowships. The staff at your local art museum may also help you with your search, particularly if you specialize in art history.
