How to Take an Advanced Placement Exam

Taking an advanced placement exam will save you both time and money. These exams allow you to skip classes in subjects that are below your academic level in both high school and college. In college, after you pass the advanced placement exam, you are given credits as if you had taken the class.

1. Talk to your guidance counselor or student adviser about signing up for advanced placement exam preparation courses. These preparation courses will help you pass the advanced placement exams the first time.
2. Read the test-taking directions thoroughly before beginning the advanced placement exam. Also, be sure to follow all verbal instructions given by the test proctor and remember how much time you have to complete each section.
3. Go through the entire question before answering. This ensures that you understand the question thoroughly.
4. Skip any difficult questions and return to them later. Remember to keep an eye on the time.
5. Double check your test answers. Get a blank sheet of paper and place it over the advanced placement answer sheet and move it down past each answer. Do this to make sure that you have answered every question.

• Get plenty of rest the night before the advanced placement exam. Getting plenty of rest the night before will ensure that you will be mentally alert for the exam.
• Remember to eat a light breakfast or lunch before the scheduled exam. Eating lightly will help you stay focused during the exam.
• Study hard for advanced placement exams in college. These exams cost around $100 to take each time. So if you fail and have to retake the test, you will also have to repay the test-taking fee.
