How to Recoat an RV Roof

Recoating an RV roof is usually only necessary when the existing roofing has either worn away over time or some other element has acted on the roof to remove the coating. RV dealers recommend that the vehicle be professionally inspected and repaired. Use the following tips to recoat an RV roof yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the entire roof area. Remove all debris and loose materials. Start by sweeping away all obvious debris. Hose off the roof and scrub with a brush or cloth. Use a solution of soap and water to cut and grease or stained areas.

    • 2

Scrape off any previous patching or silicon caulking to create a more adhesive surface. Allow the roof to dry completely.

    • 3

Tape off any voids, cracks or openings along or on top of the roof with a commercial roofing tape, available at RV supply stores. Take note that a tight solid bond exists between the tape and the roof itself.

    • 4

Caulk any holes or areas around vents and ducts with a commercial heavy-duty caulking compound.

    • 5

Finish the roof coating with a rubber or other commercially available roof sealant. Apply with a large paint roller in long even strokes. Overlap edges of the material and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wrap the tape around the vents or ducts twice for a better seal.

  • Remove any metal or weather stripping from the edges of the RV roof before final coating.

  • Repair any damages to the RV's roof after cleaning.

  • Wear eye protection and gloves for the project.
