How to Buy Replacement Tires

A good tire maintenance program includes buying replacement tires at scheduled mileage intervals. The key is to be proactive instead of reactive. It will help the driver to avoid those inopportune flat tires in hazardous conditions. Buy replacement tires when they have less than 1/16-inch of tread. A good indicator is when the tire "wear bars" show.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take note of the tire size for the vehicle that needs replacement tires. The measurements are usually found on the side wall of tire. Look for a series of number and letters like 225/70R15. If the size isn't notated on the first tire, check the other three tires or ask one of the attendants in Step 2.

  2. Step 2

Get the best deal on replacement tires. Call local tire dealers, discount chains and discount wholesale stores (membership required) with the vehicle tire specifications. Ask if there is a tire disposal fee or an installation fee to avoid any surprises.

  3. Step 3

Choose a dealer to buy replacement tires and set an appointment for installation.

  4. Step 4

Arrive to the tire replacement appointment early to fill out the necessary paperwork.

  5. Step 5

Buy the replacement tires and wait for them to be installed.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are often tire specials in the newspaper and local advertisements.
  • Buy tires in sets of two to keep the tread patterns even.
  • Check for bald tires with a Lincoln penny. Turn the penny upside down, with Lincoln's head facing down. Stick the penny in the tread. If Lincoln's head shows, it's time to replace those tires.
  • Consult the tire manufacturer's instructions for the mileage and tire rotation schedule.

on 8/30/2008 Buying Tires online can often be a cheaper bet than getting them locally. Somewhere like tire rack is much lower than your local Goodyear. Buying Galvanized wheels is also better online! -www.TrailerTireStore.com
