Step 1
Visit Bran Castle. It was erected in the 13th century as a defense against the Ottoman Empire and later inhabited by infamously brutal Vlad the Impaler, believed to be the source of the Dracula legend. Bran Castle is creepy with its secret chambers and vast displays of weapons and armor. If you survive the tour, check out the bustling handicraft market just outside the grounds of the castle that caters to those tourists seeking souvenirs of their trip to Dracula's lair.

Step 2
Stroll through Brasov. Brasov is a picturesque medieval town originally settled by the Saxons. It features ornate churches, Gothic architecture and a central square. Brasov is a good jumping off point for visiting nearby castles and ski resorts.

Step 3
Sigh over Sighisoara. Nestled in the hills of Transylvania, it is a beautiful, well-preserved medieval town featured narrow cobbled streets, brightly-painted lopsided houses and stone archways. Sighisoara's claim to fame is that it is the rumored birthplace of Dracula. The house where Dracula allegedly lived with his father is a popular tourist attraction. Many shops also sell a concoction called "Vampire Wine" for those brave enough to risk it.

Step 4
Experience Peles castle. Peles Castle is considered one of the most beautiful castles in all Europe. It was the summer residence for Romania's royal families and is a great example of Renaissance architecture. Its interior is stunning, with 160 rooms lavishly decorated in ebony, mother of pearl, walnut and leather. Peles Castle also has enormously intricate crystal chandeliers, a collection of sculptures and magnificent tapestries and stained glass windows.

Enjoy local festivals. Lighten up the foreboding atmosphere of Dracula's haunting grounds by participating in some local festivals. December 1 is widely celebrated in Transylvania because it marks Transylvania's inclusion into greater Romania in 1918. Early June is also a good time to visit because that's when the Transylvania International Film Festival is held.
