French Bordeaux red wine is often considered the most prestigious wine around. Only a small percentage of the wine in this region is white. Collect this fine wine and savor it once you decide to open a bottle from your collection.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read reviews in magazines and online and note scores. A wine will receive a score on a 100 point scale. This number should be a consideration along with tasting notes.

  2. Step 2

Understand that many of the wines that sell in the $15 to $25 range should be enjoyed within 10 to 15 years. If priced less than $15, it should be enjoyed within the first five years.

  3. Step 3

Start with tasting the less expensive types of French Bordeaux wine to determine your tastes. Once you determine what you like, you can begin to collect the more expensive ones with similar characteristics.

  4. Step 4

Treat your collection well. Make sure that the wines are kept in a cool, dark place. Purchase a wine rack to protect your bottles from tipping over and to display your collection.

  5. Step 5

Find a friend to collect with you. You can each accumulate different vintages to have variety between. Also, when the time comes to enjoy a bottle, you'll be able to sample each other's.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider a temperature controlled refrigerator specific for wine to protect your investment.
  • Once you decide to drink a bottle of French Bordeaux from your collection, allow it to breathe for at least an hour in a decanter. Serve it with the right types of food such as lamb, grilled beef, venison or Gouda.
  • The weather greatly affects wines and typically only four or five years out of 10 years will produce great wines.
