Acrophobia, otherwise known as Acromania or Acro, is an online Internet Relay Chat (IRC) game that has multiple rounds and is played by multiple players. Acrophobia was originally created in 1995 by Kenrich Mock and Michelle Hoyle, but has seen a number of changes by various developers since first created. Regardless of additional implementations, the basic rules of the game remain the same.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Enter the Internet channel for Acrophobia, which will be hosted by a bot that controls the game. At the beginning of each round the bot will generate a completely random acronym between three and seven letters long.
Step2
Compete against your fellow Acrophobia contestants by trying to write the most coherent or humorous sentence possible that follows the acronym. If the bot generates an acronym that is five letters or less, players will have 90 seconds to enter a response. If the bot generates an acronym that is six or seven letters, players will have two minutes to come up with a witty phrase. You will be given a ten second warning that answer submission is about to end.
Step3
Vote for your favorite answer, (you cannot vote for your own,) after the set time has expired. Points will be awarded to the player with the most popular answer to the acronym.
Step4
Win bonus points for writing the fastest answer or for voting for the winning response. Depending on the version of Acrophobia you are playing, the bonus points for the fastest answer might only be given to the speediest player that also receives at least one point. This mechanism ensures that players are not earning bonus points for entering nonsense. In turn, winning bonus points for picking the winning response deters players from voting for the worst answers in order to avoid giving votes to players who's answers might beat their own.
Step5
Win the game by scoring 30 points or more.

Tips & Warnings

  • You will lose points if you submit an acronym without voting.
