There are many kinds of elaborate playgrounds for children of all ages. Playgrounds can be found in parks, schools, shopping malls and backyards. Even churches have playgrounds for children. You can make simple play equipment with tires at little or no cost.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Swing

Step1
Create a swing by using a tire. This is probably the most popular type of homemade swing. To do this, find a big tree limb that hangs out horizontally from the tree.
Step2
Use a heavy rope. Put a loop in one end of the rope. Make sure the loop knot is tied securely. Throw the loop over the limb. Run the other end of the rope through the loop. Pull tightly to secure the rope to the limb.
Step3
Turn the tire up on its edge. Run the rope in through the tire. Raise the tire about 3 feet off of the ground. Tie a secure knot with the rope around the tire.
Step4
Instruct children to sit down inside the tire with legs hanging out through the other side. While sitting on the inside rim of the tire, children (or adults) should hang onto the rope as they swing.

Tunnel

Step1
Make play equipment with tires in the form of tunnels that can be used to play hide-and-seek. You can make tunnels with tires by stacking tires on their ends.
Step2
Push the tires tightly up against each other. This will take two people. One should hold the tires in place while the other prepares to tie them together with rope.
Step3
Use ropes on each side and tie the tires off tightly to each other. This allows the tires to stand up so that you can crawl through them.

Bridge

Step1
Consider making a swinging bridge out of tires. You'll need four 4-by-4 or 6-by-6 pressure-treated posts. They should be 8 feet long. Measure the length you want your bridge to be.
Step2
Dig your first hole 3 feet deep. Now set your second post at the length you've decided. Come back to your first hole 90 degrees and set your third post 3 feet apart from your first. Repeat on the other end for your fourth post. Secure each post in its hole with concrete.
Step3
Drill a hole in each of your four posts. Then, drill two holes on each side of your four tires (four holes in each tire).
Step4
Run a heavy rope through your first post. Thread your rope through your tires to the other posts. Tie off one end.
Step5
Repeat the process of Step 4 on the other side. Pull the slack out of the rope and tie off the end at the other post. The tires will be suspended and you'll have play equipment made with tires in the form of a swinging bridge.

Tips & Warnings

  • Each project is made using standard size vehicle tires and 3/4 inch rope.
  • Posts can be any size you prefer. Just make sure they are pressure-treated so they won't rot in the ground.
