A dude ranch vacation is a great way to channel the inner cowboy. It provides a memorable experience for the whole family. Many dude ranches offer a variety of activities, such as horseback riding, swimming, camping and sports. For the city slicker, however, packing is a bit more complicated.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take riding clothes. Every dude ranch offers some kind of horse experience. Boots are recommended, although rubber soled healed shoes may be a substitute. Pack long pants, shirts with long sleeves, a warm jacket, a rain poncho, a hat, leather gloves, tall socks and a bandanna or scarf. Riding on a dude ranch can be a rugged activity. Take clothes that can get dirty and torn.

  2. Step 2

Pack for other activities. Check with the dude ranch on other activities offered. A swimsuit, beach towel, hiking clothes and golf clothes may be items to include in the packing.

  3. Step 3

Include personal care items. A long day in the saddle will necessitate sunscreen and lip balm. Hand wipes are helpful, and insect repellent is recommended. Take a first aid kit for minor scratches and include a muscle pain relieving cream for those tired saddle aches.

  4. Step 4

Get ready to gussy up. Many dude ranches have a social activity. If so, include appropriate dress up clothes.

  5. Step 5

Be equipped. A riding helmet is often required for children; it is also recommended for adults. Take personal golf clubs along if a golf course is available. Likewise, fishing gear should be included if there's fishing available. Protect the eyes by including good sunglasses. A flashlight is also handy for any nighttime activities.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many dude ranches offer riding helmets and other equipment, like fishing poles, for loan. Check with the dude ranch for equipment availability and any cost.
  • Check thrift stores and resale shops for used cowboy boots. These will be cheaper than purchasing new boots.
